Wendy the Whippet, a mutant double muscled dog, has internet abuzz
On June 25th a dog got her day, but not for saving Timmy from the well or her racing abilities. The Canadian newspaper Victoria Times Colonist then published the story about a muscular dog, which has a mutation of the myostatin gene. The owner is now juggling the international media attention and Wendy even has an offer of a role in a sci-fi series! Read the original article and the followup:
Wendy the Whippet has a genetic disorder that has resulted in an exceptionally muscular appearance. You might mistake her for a pitbull with a tiny head, but she is a whippet. Whippets usually are quite muscular, and at the same time petite. Wendy is a 27-kilogram rippling mass of muscle, two times the size of normal female whippets.
I’m a nice doggy. Really, don’t be afraid…

I can’t believe that dog is so big! it is so cool i want one ^.^ but i have a question does she ever stop growing? what type of dog is she? and what breeds are they mixed with?
Comment by nicole | November 24, 2007 |
The dog is a whippet named wendy she works for the army somewhere in europe i think the russians
Comment by Jerry VIllatoro | September 28, 2009 |
you’ve got to be kidding right? The dog has a mutation, it’s not supposed to be like that. It might not be healthy looking like that…
Comment by Karen | March 4, 2010 |
Wendy doesn’t work an army , where the heck did you get that idea !? She lives in Victoria BC (CANADA !) on a farm with her owner Ingrid where her owner managed a horse farm and Wendy roamed the farm . She is still around and as far as I know she isn’t still growing .
*sorry for sounding like a smart-ass , I worked at the farm where her owner managed for 2 years and I knew Wendy . She’s the sweetest thing and so quiet , she never once barked , she’d come and say hi and go lie in the sun out front of the barns !
🙂
Comment by Meghan | August 23, 2010 |
Wow, lucky you
Comment by Immi | December 4, 2012
You have got to be kidding me. She has a genetic mutation that is very unhealthy and though her death is still unknown, it is likely that her mutation caused her death. You would be extremely ignorant and selfish to purposely breed a genetic mess of a dog just for it’s looks.
Comment by Bess | February 3, 2021 |
her growth size is limited. and no you can’t create one. this is mutated whippet you can’t mix breeds to gain like this one. its 1 in million myostatin disorder
Comment by stefan | January 27, 2008 |
This dog is awesome. It should be bred with a pitbull. I want to know when it will have puppies
Comment by Joe Kerr | March 10, 2008 |
you call that a disorder!? i’d love to be an equivilant of that!!
Comment by rupert freestone | March 14, 2008 |
this aint animal abuse i know what animal abuse is it is starving the dog or hitting the dog as u see the dog is in very good shape and she has no sighns of neglect or scarring because her coat is shiny not from the sun but because she is very healthy so get ur facts straight
Comment by elizabeth | July 1, 2009 |
poor thing i have a whippet and a pitbull but that’s just cruel to over breed and it having to suffer aww…if only animals can speek you know tell people how much there hurting..
Comment by Lexi | January 13, 2010

Comment by anomynos | March 17, 2008 |
WTF YOU DUMBASS THATS CALLED A “GENETIC DISORDER” but seeing as how you lack he intelligence and cant read the article, im guessing you cant read this let alone know what “genetic disorder” means.
Comment by thephantomdragon | July 1, 2009 |
only an absolute fucking moron would abuse that dog
Comment by justin | July 3, 2009 |
F*** with that dog and it F***s with you… That’s no abuse.. is freakish, but it’s still nature.. let it be, she’s healthy.. so get out of your protesting-a$$ frame of mind, and appreciate that nature does change with mutations.. remember apes to humans? THAT WAS A MUTATION !!!
Darwinism all over again.. BRING IT ON!!!!
Comment by anos | September 22, 2009 |
er…yea, a few too many ******* right there, fucking does not have that many asterisks when censored. Secondly, I agree with the other dude, u went off the handle for no reason wutsoever, the dog has a “genetic ‘disorder'” which, by the way, disorder??? wtf, if that’s a disorder than call Scott Steiner or Hulk Hogan diseased or ill. I know a lot of ppl who would love that “disorder”. anyways, awesome dog.
Comment by zanbu16 | October 4, 2009 |
Fuk dat dog is meen man i would love 2 hav 1 im just gonna pump my poodle full of roids
Comment by travis davis | March 18, 2008 |

Comment by sophie | March 26, 2008 |
Your an idiot….you need to learn how to read. i cant fathom how you came across this, when your intelligence is so laking.
But if you learn how to read in the near future then look up (mutation of the myostatin gene)…
Comment by Tholamas O'Dell | July 30, 2009 |
I agree with some of your criticism but aren’t you also at fault? You spelt “you’re” incorrectly and didn’t use an apostrophe in “can’t”.
Comment by Anon | September 11, 2009 |
you can’t be so ignorant. animal cruelty is not something that one girl can do. even 10,000 girls can barely make a difference. i’m not stopping you from trying, as i want to stop animal cruelty too, but realize that there are too many animals to save.
Comment by Andersen Chiang | March 2, 2010 |
okayy, this is not abuse, nor is it some retard owner pumping his/her dog full of steroids to make it look this way. its called DOUBLE MUSCLE its a gene mutation that causes the muscle tissue to grow twice as much as it would normally.
Comment by piddle | March 4, 2010
this dog has steroids
Comment by HANNA | July 21, 2010 |
this breed should not look like that . what ever your shooting up in to this dog is really slowing it life down .no one should be proud !!!! animal liberation !!!!!!gray hound are strong but slim if there raced . not like this . stop giving this dog drugs !!!!
Comment by ix | March 26, 2008 |
This did is NOT on steroids just to let you know. Wendy is a Rare breed of whippets. Get it Straight, think twice, look it up, talk to people before you post comments like this!
Comment by Bam | June 29, 2009 |

Does this dog have a less life ecxpectancy than other dogs? Does she live a normal life?
Comment by Vanessa | April 9, 2008 |
This dog has a genetic disorder, it was not enhanced in any way, according to the owner. Dogs with genetic abnormalities should not be bred nor should any dog be bred by an inexperienced breeder. The breeding of animals with genetic mutations is risky because it promotes the continued strain of recessive alleles and can yeild unhealthy offspring. Hopefully the owner knows this and this ignorant will be ignored. – a dog enthusiast
Comment by makenzie | April 9, 2008 |
just because this dog has a genetic mutation doesn’t mean that it was bred from at least 1 mutated parent. some things happen naturally.
Comment by Andersen Chiang | March 2, 2010 |
dont let Mr. Vick geta hold of this dog lol
Comment by dalton | April 10, 2008 |
Dude that is hilarious.
Comment by hahah | November 24, 2009 |
If this dog really does have a genetic disorder is there anyway of sorting it i sort of believe the owner and other comments are bare wrong everyones saying stupid things. and have you had any animal cruelty agents on you if so you best have medical evidence that the dog has amedical condition.
Comment by sum boy | April 12, 2008 |

if his muscles grow so big. then what about the heart? wouldn’t it restrict blood flow if it got too big?
Comment by mIchael | September 2, 2008 |
Poor dog. That must put a serious strain on her heart and lungs. To breed from this dog would be disgusting and inflicting this disorder on future generations would be completely irresponsible and cruel.Whippets are delicately muscled not musclebound, this is a disorder not a characteristic. If you people want a muscular dog, choose a breed thats meant to be that way, don`t make a victim of a genetic fluke.
Comment by Whippet | October 9, 2008 |
Hi i think shes great i breed whippets in South Africa and i just love them!im just wondering what the life expectancy is for dog with the dissorder?

I don’t know what is more outstanding – the appearance of the dog, or the sublime ignorance and illiteracy of those who have bothered to post. If you are willing to take the time to submit a comment, then please please please make the effort to read the very briefest of articles.
E.g. “what type of dog is she?” The article is called Wendy the Whippet FFS! Or alternatively the accusations of dog abuse that are levelled against the owners, it is a generic disorder you morons!
I’ve heard about dog in-breeding, but perhaps we should be more concerned with in-breeding within the human population. Seems to be an awful lot of dribbling retards out there…. Just a thought.
Comment by Matt | December 7, 2008 |
Well said Matt! I just can’t believe how stupid so many of the people making comments on here are showing themselves to be. I have very little hope for the world when so many random people commenting on a post about a genetic disorder in a dog, show themselves to be about as smart as the vegetables on their dinner plate! What said thing our species has become in such a few short decades! We need a plague or something to get rid of these fucking moronic subhumans!

Comment by Myriam | December 31, 2008 |
Just a brief comment–this is a known gene mutation, and there are a couple of cattle breeds in which double-muscling is selected for–obviously, it yields more beef! One such breed is the Belgian Blue.
The main issue with this mutation is birth, when offspring can be too hefty for the mother’s birth canal, so have to be delivered by caesarian. I would also imagine that the whippet is a breed not well suited for this mutation–those slender bones have a lot of weight to support, there.
Wendy is not on steroids, and she gets a normal amount of exercise–the hefty muscles are purely the result of the mutation, and living a normal life. As long as she doesn’t put too much strain on her bones and break something, she should be just fine. I imagine the extra strength helps to compensate for some of the joint strain as well. She probably eats twice as much as a normal whippet!

Wendy has a defective Myostatin gene, the gene that weakens muscle tissue. I don’t know why the body needs this, but this is what a dog looks like if she went to the gym every day for a year. She’s the Arnold of dogs and as far as I know there is nothing wrong with her health or her life span.

i would just like to educate all dog lovers like my self that may think that this case is abuse…. this dog does have a very lagitimate and rare but nature disorder that has happened in othere animals aswell…. look up cows for a simple answer and there are super cows that have the same disorder that are actually breed for this very reason and even though you might not agree with it it has been provin to be healthy. in saying that i thing this could be a really interesting breeding dog for many dog lovers just dont get it outta control keep a good health record for both dogs and owners so that if the dog is bred and its offspring has he same conditions it’s monitored and regulated to be safe and healthy for dogs and humans alike! and as a last note please if you think that APBT(pitbulls)are a violent or a bad breed please educate yourself! this is a very very good breed and has a long track record for being very faithful loving dogs! and it’s not the dogs fault that uneducated humans miss train dogs smarter than themselves. im not being rude but if your not educated then your lacking the knowladge to properly train yourself let a lone a dog of any breed…. thanks for reading! 😉

Comment by sophie | June 2, 2009 |
Ok, wow basically more than 50% of you are stupid and illiterate. The article says that it is a genetic disorder, not animals abuse. It would be horrible if a person out there was sick enough to give there dogs steroids and other bad human drugs. But in this case READ! Even with the disorder the dog is cuter then any person could be. And I am sure that this dog got quite a bit of media attention and test were probably run too to see if the dog was given any drugs and what disorder this was, and if it was given drugs she would have been rescued from the owner and since she wasn’t it is OBVIOUSLY a genetic disorder. Now stop being complete idiots, and for those who think it would be cool to give steroids or anything to your dog or any animals you are sick assholes.

Just to put it out there, there’s been some research done into this gene mutation on humans (or research done to hopefully be used to help humans). scientists are trying to come up with a way to control the gene to help people with muscular dystrophy and such things. Nature does strange things sometimes. I wish people would read first and maybe type myostatin gene into google or something. Maybe the dog is uncomfortable due to the gene mutation, maybe it’s perfectly happy. Shiny coat and clear eyes are a pretty good indication it’s as healthy as possible though. Strange looking animal, kind of reminds me of a werewolf. I like it. =)

I can’t believe all of the people on here who are saying they want a dog like Wendy. She has a genetic disorder and she is going to die because of it. Asking for another dog to get this would be like asking for the next 200 children in the world to get down syndrome or cancer or something. I can’t believe that you guys are just asking for more dogs that will suffer for their entire lives, which are shortened to only a few years. All of you who are saying that you want a dog like this are SICK!

O.o … Okay , initially I expected comments that wouldn’t variate from anything else than the discussion of the mutation. Don’t get me me wrong though, I did expect some terminology like “Awesome, raD, Sick etc.” . But the deviants I expected weren’t even close, it’s perceivable to me only as a thread of idiocy and utter lack of information… In layman’s terms : OMFG what a bunch of f*cking idiots !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is where I’m going to give a brief explanation(Not that a lot of you’ll understand or at least give the required perception to what I’m writing to try and accumulate a better understanding of the dog’s “Disorder” which can also be called a genetic deviation…) of the difference between steroids and a f*cking rare genetic deviation(Mutation, for you morons). Steroids is a drug that helps accumulate more muscle mass, it’s a simple drug that allocates a shit load of protein to your muscles thus helping them build at an alarming rate.(Layman’s terms : Makes you look like a guerrilla faster.) The dog named Whitney suffers(Not painful suffering, the terminology used here is for indicating that the dog has this mutation) from an extremely rare mutation where instead of growing normal sized muscles for a dog of her species she grew twice that amount. This isn’t due to any form of drugs or anything like that, it happens when the mutation of the myostatin gene(which should stop excessive muscle growth) renders it useless, resulting in a hell of a lot more muscle because the myostatin ne’er said stop growing… So i.o.w. no abuse, no drugs and also genetic disorders or mutations(Not always the same meaning, be weary) isn’t always a bad thing, in this context it would be called a beneficial mutation(though it has it’s negatives.).
Comment by AgileFoxI | March 8, 2012 |
So is a “whippet” a real thing? Or a disease? Does the dog every have mucle pains ? If she was aggressive would you be dead? So how old is she like ummm 20-30 or something like that? If you were to breed her then whoyld her puppies have the mucles when they grow up too.
Comment by kayleigh | January 21, 2014 |
I watched a program about Wendy. She can`t run as fast as other whippets but she is still very fast. I think she looks lovely but I would not want a whippet with the same problem as her because her muscles are so big that it would be hard to control her. 🙂
