Jay Cutler is Mr Olympia 2006 – Ronnie Coleman is defeated

Jay Cutler quote after the historic victory:

– They said the champ can’t be taken out. Well you know what? The new champ’s in town. And the Sandow is staying in Las Vegas. And I get to keep my hair. (Jay had promised to shave of his hair if he didn’t win.)

  1. Apparently, Ronnie knew that he lost before the announcement. I was there. He was acting out in a depressed manner on stage. He walked around dejectedly, he either knealed down or laid down on stage in apparent protest. When face-to-face with Jay, he said “You won” or “You win”. I could read his lips through my Canon binoculars from my viewpoint far right of stage (102). Maybe he knew by his performance. But, I sure would like to know that he was not fed the information ahead of time and that the results were not leaked!

  2. I always thought that 1st place in a bodybuilding contest was reserved for the individual with the best physique and routine(s). Maybe I was looking at different pictures than what the judges saw, because Ronnie Coleman’s overall condition and muscularity was more evident than Jay Cutler’s. Jay did improve, but improvement is only guaranteed to make you better than yourself, not another athlete. Jay made his back wider, but did not have the shape and thickness to beat out Ronnie’s. Jay’s abs are apparent and have no depth, whereas Ronnie’s were deeply cut in comparison. From head to toe Jay looked impressive, but comparably Ronnie was more impressive. Maybe for next year’s Olympia, eyeglasses and binoculars can be given to the judges so they can actually see the competitors.

  3. From the pictures I have seen, Ronnie Coleman’s size and condition was superior to Jay Cutler. Jay is a great bodybuilder, but he lacks symmetry, especially in his legs. Also, Ronnie’s X frame is about as good as it gets, where as Jay’s body is blocky. Even in the pic posted at the top of this tread, you can see the defintion in Ronnie’s arms, shoulders and chest is far better than Jay’s. I don’t know what the judges where looking at, or if their trying to boot Ronnie out to have a fresh Olympia, but I am very disappointed with the final results. As far as I’m concerned Ronnie is the greatest bodybuilder of all time and should have won his ninth sandow!

  4. While I agree that Jay has improved, anyone could have seen that Ronnie even without flexing, looked far more lean and cut to shreds. He almost looked like a stone sculptue. Ronnie also has a more appealing physique. Jay looked square and definitely not appealing. Ronnie is a natural champion who lives bodybuilding everyday. It is his life. Such people cannot be kept down. Be prepared for a mean unbeatable machine next olympia in Ronnie. Jay should have placed around 6th or so. Darrem, Gustavo, Dexter clearly looked bettter than him.

  5. I think this years olympia was definetly fixed, Jay cutler was no comparison to the best body builder in the world ” BIG RONNIE COLEMAN ” i think the judges must have been watching another show and they should be fired or banned from judging again, i take it the judges must have been lee haney fans, and could`nt have Ronnie beating his record, jay should have came about fourth, BIG RONNIE will be back, there is only one word to describe Ronnie “AWESOME” COME ON RONNIE LETS DO IT AGAIN

  6. Finally they got it right! the sandow should have been jays ever since 2001 when they definately fixed it for ronnie to win again and from what i hear most of the audience got up and cheered as in they were happy! ronnie was great but he made the mistake of comming into this one 15-20 lbs too heavy and injured he should have sat this one out and saved himself the humiliation of defeat and just to show it wasn’t a fluke ronnies ass was handed to him again three more times by jay after the olympia! say what you will about jay but at least he doesn’t sport what looks like a 41 inch pot belly in side shots if ronnie is smart he’ll either call it quits right now or come into the show at a sliced to the bone 280lbs next year and pray that jay stays the same as he was this year and doesn’t improve which isn’t likely to be the case.

  7. Well,Even though I am a Die-Hard fan of Jay Cutler (since he is a Good Looking BodyBuilding Pro),i am not impressed with this years olympia Result.i downloaded the olympia 2006 finals posing and spents hours watching it,and
have reached to a conclusion that there can’t be any bodybuilder who can stand next to “BIG RON Coleman”.
“Ronnie” you dont have to prove anything to anyone, you are the best, and your “ultimate dense, mature muscles and symmetry” speak for Yourself. You just Rock.
Sorry “JAY” but u don’t deserve it.

Comment by Amarish narvekar | November 28, 2006 | Reply

  8. Ronnie was not at his best, but was still head and shoulders better than Cutler. Cutler is blocky and needs to compete atleast 20 pounds lighter to really look awesome. Ronnie has better overall presence on stage and is better than Cutler body part for body part and in overall symmetry and mucularity. Cutler seemed to be holding some water which was evident when he relaxed.

If ever an Olympia was rigged, the 2006 show was! It’s a shame. The controversy created does’nt add axcitement to the sport, but reflect a lack of credibility and integrity.

  9. If the Olympia is won from the back like we always say then The blade should have won the Olympia. Due to Ronnie’s injury I do not think he train as much as he wanted to. Therefore one can say his back was not up to what we’ve come to expect. Jay made some improvement in his back, still his lower back looks chuby. If ronnie was going to loose the olympia and the kind of physique jay presented then the olympia should have gone like this:
Dexter, Ronnie, Maybe Jay, then victor.

  10. I really think Jay deserved it this year. I agree that Ronnie has by far the more genetically gifted body. However, look at each individual muscle this year from the two. Jay looks more “blocky” but each muscle looks larger and more defined than Coleman’s.

  11. Jay came out massive and hard.Legs/Back was explosive. He really did his homework this year blew them away,he was cheering/revving the crowd and he knew he was the new champ during the olympia.
Kept it up jay,its all yours for the coming years

  15. Jay is really massive bodybuilder but whenever I watch him I feel that he is more like a square. Ronnie has a very impressive V shape. I believe that the judges selected Jay this time as a kind of change only. Did they feel that it is boring that Sandow goes to Ronnie every year? please look at Ronnie’s pics well — the man deserves his 9th sandow

I watched the show and was shocked and saddend by the results. I have not heard yet but I sure hope Big Ron comes back this year and take his place in history. Big Ron please do it for one of your biggest fans.

  20. Judging from the photos, Ronnie Coleman should have been awarded first prize. Obviously someone , or some marketing corporation, has pressured the judges into awarding first place to anyone who can get within a country mile of Big Ron. PS: Has Don King taken over the Mr Olympia contest – the results sure smell like his “influence”. All sarcasm aside though, the sad thing is; is that this contest has lost its credibility because of the judges’ decision.

  23. yes, cutler deserves the win. he may not have most pleasing symmetrical physique, but from each callout it’s obvious he’s superior to everybody. Cutler is BIGGER than Coleman now and came in heavier, but he has big joints so it doesn’t seem apparent.
Martinez really threatened the top two. It’s going to be a fierce battle between Cutler, Coleman and Martinez at this year Olympia, should they really want to come at their best.

  25. Ronnie is an idiot, he’s such a sore loser, Jay Cutler won fair and square. Jay has wider and more complete Lats, and better Calves. Ronnie is an old fart that needs to start retiring, his pecs were saggy, Jay beat him in posing too. At times, Ronnie was looking down at himself to make sure he had his pose right.

    Comment by Timbo | March 1, 2007 | Reply

  26. Dont really know who I am writing this too, but you have to admit Jay Cutler is Mr. Olympia, regardless. Keeping that aside though, Ronnie Coleman was, isand will forever be, King, God of iron and Mr. Olympia. I got into serious training looking at pics of RC. It dont matter if Jay thinks he is big the best or Mr. Olympia, It matters what we think and in the world of Iron, Ronnie Coleman is “Mr. Olympia”

Comment by Lancelot Pereira | March 2, 2007 | Reply

  27. For all of you, who support Ronnie..does he has the Calves of Champ! Hell NO. Does he has the triceps of a champ? Hell No. Does he has the abs of a champ? Hell NO. Ronnie has a massive physique, but he doesnt have the V-Taper look of a champ, his waist is as wide as his back. I am not trying to make a point agains Ronnie, but let’s be objective, he does have the freakiest back in the milky way, and the best biceps ever, but he doesnt have the perfect physique you fans claim. I am a neutral follower of the sport who gives credits to the deserver. Jay Deserved to win this time, however he’s working for mass and loose the focus for lines. Victor has the body of a champ, only his calves are a weakness. But who knows, any of these monster can come up in shape and make a surprise. For example, Gunter Shlierkamp has the biggest frame of the show and comes with poor conditioning. Markus never brings his tricpes to razor his arms. Dexter is the same in each show (should place third or fourth even without posing). Jay won, he deserved. I think Victor has a chance this time, big chance. But if Ronnie’s fans come to be the judges as it has been in 2001 and other years, we might see the “big-back-big waist” win the show again.

  31. Well I wasn’t present at the Olympia Contest but I’ve got a double disk DVD of Olympia 2006 with superb quality. It’s absolutely clear that the results were fixed – Coleman looked dejected before the announcement & Cutler was looking down not to show his excitement! I don’t know Colemen but judging by his interviews and movies he’s a shit of a person – I wouldn’t like cross my way with him ever. It’s evident that Jay is a far better person…
But this is a bodybuilding contest where people are judged by the quality of their muscle and not by the niceness of their character. You dare to mock Ronnie’s defeat “Ronnie is an idiot, he’s such a sore loser” – but how would you feel if ARE DUMPED without any grounds whatsoever! I’m particularly disgusted with comment 27 – Arnold Schwatzenegger, for instance, din’t have Tom Platz’s legs but still was (and is) the greatest bodybuilder of all times – because was judged as a whole! Ronnie does have a belly – but at least he’s got clearly defined ABS – & Cutler hasn’t! Ronnies back isn’t as good as it used to be but still it’s miles away from Jay’s! And if you think that bodybuilding is only about mass – why don’t you argue about Markus RÜHL’s 8th position?! Jay is big & so is a gorilla or orang-utan – would you like to see them on stage? – some of Cutler’s muscles are better defined – that would make a huge difference in a Butcher’s shop! but bodybuilders are not butchers – we are aesthetes! And the overall impression is obvious – Cutler doesn’t stand a chance!
Maybe Coleman will be back next time, maybe not – personally I don’t see any sense in trying to convince corrupted judges that water is wet and ice is cold! Sorry for my pessimism but Olympia is the biggest event in our lives and bodybuilding doesn’t have any future unless the current judges at least express an official appology to Coleman for their biased judgement!!!

  42. Jay Cutler won fair and square. I don’t get how any of you guys can think otherwise. Jay has bigger calves, a better back, better quad striations..the only poses i think Ron beat Jay on were most muscular, and side chest. Otherwise, Jay beat him easily. I honestly don’t get how you think Jay didn’t look better than Ron, I just don’t. It’s just time for Ronnie to retire, he’s the best bodybuilder of all time. I bet 10 years from now, if he was still training, you guys would still say Ronnie should have won the Mr. Olympia, even if he’s old. Jay won fair and square, even if you don’t like Jay, give him some credit. He’s been 2nd for so long now, he deserved this win because he came in better condition, and looked better than Ronnie. Plain and simple. I don’t see how you could see otherwise, I just don’t. Congrats Jay.

He look way better than Ronnie did, and he didn’t have a bulging stomach like Ronnie did! 2007 will be Jay Cutlers year again, Ronnie should just hang up his trunks. Like Jay cutler said, “I, already made room for another sandow.”

Drawing more people to want to see this. Also Big Jay,More Ego,More Money,More sponsorship,And also he has something to really think about defending ,the big title, The Mr. 2007 title, So I will also say Jay will come in in shape, more size. Ronnie is clearly a good person all round, strict Christian man and doesn’t need to talk about anything else than what he feels he needs to. I have watch one of Cutler’s DVD’s and the guy is sooooooo boring, constantly mentioning sponsors this, sponsors that… He has no charisma or character whatsoever. Yet when oy watch Ronnie on DVD he is a very jovial person, always laughing, smiling and clearly enjoying his life. You can’t help but like the guy. He celebrated and loved where ever he goes in the world.

He lets the weights and his body do the talking.

Cutler’s Legs and Back = defined and shredded. Wider shoulders and massive traps. These are eye catchers. Ronnie’s abs were great, but got lost. Judges were impressed with Jay’s improvements.

Where did Ronnie’s legendary arms go in 2006? You know, the sick front double-bicep pose where it looks like he is smuggle a few baseballs in there? Ronnie needs to blast the legs, widen his shoulders and bring those arms back. Jay needs to keep the legs, grow/define the arms. 2007 will be insane!

  59. I do believe that this year’s Olympia was justified. I have been a Coleman fan initially but Mr. O should be awarded to the best contestant not the person’s accomplishments. For several years Coleman was untouchable, the 2004 contest Coleman was an unbelievable 296 pounds. But 2005 and 2006 especially he was lighter, flatter, and not as sharp. While Cutler did make some vast improvements. I always felt that even during Haney’s era that Labrada was a “clear-cut” winner in Rimini,Italy and he was robbed. Haney won and even took the muscularity round which was BS. During the Yates era, I was a big fan as anybody of Yates in 1993 but in 1994, torn biceps aside, Yates was BLOATED!!! I could not believe Yates was chosen the winner and I always admired Yates for his professionalism but a real champion would have admitted that the judges should award the man whom deserves it. Do not fall in love with a bodybuilder and have blinds on when your favorite is a mere shadow of his former self. As stated above I am/was fans of each Mr.O mentioned above. But you have to be unbiased and see your Mr.O in the condition and shape that they need to be in as well as keep improving to call themselves Mr. Olympia. It will add credibility to this whacky sport! Otherwise the mysterious wins that occur will have fans and prospective fans seeing bodybuilding as we do “Heavyweight Boxing” which is now a complete joke.

  60. Damn, where was I in 2006…..I assumed Mr. Olympia would be handed to Ronnie Coleman. I saw the pictures, the videos, Ronie was by far superior to Jay. I think this was more or less, the IFBB wanted to share the reigns a little bit and crown a new champion. That’s all this was. Hope to see Ronnie again in 2007 and whip Jay’s a$$.
I think this year, Im gonna pay a little more attention to the show. Go RONNIE!!!!!!!!!

  61. It’s hard to say who deserve Mr.O title Ron or Jay. Because Jay has wider back and shoulders, but lower muscle thickness. That’s why judges exist to make the criterion.
And for me one thing is clear: history is made and the judges criterion changed. Let Ron’s fans look at his lost from this poit, and it will be easy for them to swallow it!

  68. Ronnie is still the best, even he lost to Jay. Jay was more ripped, shredded than Ronnie, but Jay will lose this year. BigRon Coleman got back to receive the Sandow throphy from Jay. Jay is fearing Ronnie.

  70. I am a huge fan of Ronnie Coleman, but come on guys, you gotta admit, his traps and his legs are more defined than ronnie’s. Anywhere else, Ronnie blows away Cutler (who i actually really dont like). And from watching various interviews of Ronnie, he seems like a really cool guy to talk to.

  71. Ronnie was good in his day, but its obvious that its just a bandwagon type idea now. Everybody knows that all the blacks get on here and bash cutler and praise coleman. Why does it always have to be a racial thing?

  83. Dear all,
All those who are crying so much for Ronnie please tell me do any of u have 20:20 vision? Seriously one guy was saying Cutlers Abs are undefined. If u will see the pre judging pics Ronnie has a 4 pack (not even 6) and u can count really defined 8 packs on Jay. Shit people who r crazy abt ronnie sure dont know wht striations and cross striations mean. Just look at the Christmas tree formation on Jay’s back when he’s abt to do a lat spread and u’ll eat ur own spit(2 the one who said his lower back looks bloated or whatever). I still love the kind of Physique tht Arnold/ Lee Haney/ Flex Wheeler had. Symmetrical and beautiful with no bloated stomachs.
Ronnie and infact most of the current body builders look as if they are 4-5 months pregnant & in the case of Ronnie 6+.
Pls pls pls dont think tht if muscles look shinier they r bigger and more defined. Striations define definition and in tht dept. Jay was much ahead of Ronnie. So pls do put this at rest coz Finally Jay lost to a guy when he shudnt have and won in 2007 when Martinez shuda won.
    Ciao n sweet dreams

  87. Its difficult to say because both were in very good condition. but ronnies abs were little water filled but his arms, legs were well toned. jay had an impressive mass and quality. his trap, shoulders, overall upper body was massive and muscular then ronnie. u can c the above photos jay looks more massive then ronnie. but well toned like ronnies thighs. and arms. it can be like.jay is 100 and ronnie is 98.

  89. Ronnie’s waist was way out of control his belly looked huge, his chest was flat, and his back was full of water, and his triceps were flat to, this is what the judges saw, victor should have won 2006 , but then flex wheeler should of had 1998, ronnie 1999 2000, jay 2001 , ronnie 2002 2003 , jay 2004 2005, and victor 2007 , body building would be much better if the best man on the night won, not just because there already mr O , roll on 09 i hope jay comes in looking like he did in 05 , but then in kai greene in on who knows

  91. I think those asshole judges should be given a barbell in their asses. Those corrupted or jealous judges gave a biased decision that made JAY win.

JAY on training 10 more years, can’t get even near to Big Ron Coleman.

  92. Ronnie deserved to win this one, hands down..

  93. I dont know ronnie definitely has the X frame and is absolutely massive…but in terms of how they judge the competition, yeah they were probably getting bored with ronnie, but at the same time just looking at the picture above, ronnies muscles do not have great definition. Dont get me wrong theyre huge but take the legs for example; ronnies legs are massive but they are just one giant blob as opposed to jays legs where you can literally see every single muscle in his leg clearly defined. Also look at the right arm of both men; jays arm you can clearly see every single muscle in his arm with definition whereas ronnies arm, while huge, is just a giant hunk of muscle. They both are huge, both have fantastic symmetry, so I think this one came down to definition and separation of all muscle groups, and that’s why it went to Jay.

  94. I own this olympia and have watched. Ronnie looked way off in prejudging!! There is no way he could win this despite sheer size and cut glutes. He had a Massive amount of fat on the lower back aswell. No def’n in his shoulders in side chest shots. In fact im disgusted that the sport has gone this way with no credit been givin to a pleasing physique with symmetry and conditioning, basically just pleasing 2 look at. He just looked like a block no symmetry at all. (could hardly control abdominal muscles). He had the Massive pot gut and u can’t even see the side of his trunks lol!! Ronnie did a crap posing routine and was disrspectful to the federation by not receiving his reward and all the other athletes. I would put victor ahead of ron in this show! Not to mention ron’s triceps are almost non-existent.

  95. Matt Jaxon, for every critique you can make about Ronnie – you can make 2 more about Jay Cutler in 2006.

It was a fixed competition. Plain and simple.
