Fitness program helps female prisoners develop body, mind and spirit

The Mighty Kat writes on her blog about a Curves franchise owner who took the fitness program into Colorado Women’s Correctional Facility:

“Now this is an exciting story. A franchise owner took her gym business into women’s prisons, and of course the inmates love it. Looks like it is run like the franchise’s model – put the women on a generic circuit training program, teach them about diet. Appeals to those who want direction and, at the same time, to feel their own power and individuality and improve themselves overall.”’s Tech did some of his solid videocapturing, so now you can see a 12 minute capture from Discovery Channel about powerlifting in prison. It’s also discussed in a thread on Muscle Mayhem Bodybuilding Forums

  1. I also think that program is great. I work at a halfway house in Honolulu, and I’m writing a grant proposal to buy fitness equipment for the women at our facility. I’m looking for articles citing the importance of fitness for female inmates – do you know of anywhere I could look? Thanks!

  2. Not just for female inmates, lists many of the issues, pro and con, involved. The company has an economic interest in keeping weights in prison, but it’s out in the open. 24 hour Fitness gives a good overview in this article.

As for more articles, really is THE resource (free access to millions of articles from thousands of publications).
