Three times Mr. Olympia Frank Zane, 64, making a comeback?

Frank Zane won Mr. Olympia 1977, -78 and -79. In December 2006 he peaked and shot some new photos. In his monthly newsletter Frank tells us that he’s found it harder and harder to get in really good shape the older he gets. The latest diet and training program he used is outlined in the Winter issue of Franks own Building the Body Quarterly Magazine/Newsletter:

I was able to get in my best shape in over a decade and this Winter issue describes all the details of my workouts, diet, and motivation along with photos of the condition I achieved by the middle of December 2006. You may want to subscribe if you don’t already.

Most of all I proved to myself that age is no barrier to physical improvement and I intend to be in even better shape in 2007. One thing I did learn is that as you get older you have to allow more time to get in shape. I did everything possible to reach peak condition, dieting, training two even three times a day, 1000 reps of abdominal work daily, and eventually 1 and a half hours of aerobics a day.

The Terror Diet: Stephen King on dieting

Stephen King looks at new ways to take off extra weight by:

“I hadn’t found a single diet that tried to scare people thin. Can you imagine? In a society that’s currently going bugwit about anthrax and North Korean missiles? Not one. And that’s just wrong. It was a short jump from there to what follows. Here, then, are the high points of what I call (modestly) the Terror Diet.”

Vegan bodybuilders gathers in Portland, Oregon

Portland seems to be the center for real life gatherings of vegan bodybuilders, internet being the virtual. The Oregonian makes fun reports of the subculture within the subculture of bodybuilding. The question; is vegan bodybuilding an oxymoron?

“Vegans have visited Portland for a gathering of like-minded weightlifters and other athletes that ends tonight. The conference, Vegan Vacations, started last week and has included a vegan cooking demonstration, a visit to an animal sanctuary and plenty of workouts. Some events, Cheeke said, have drawn more than two dozen people.

It’s been so much fun that Robert Cheeke, who owns a company called Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness, wants to host a similar gathering every year in Portland, which is known worldwide as a vegan-friendly city.”

Live and let live… Even more can be found at the Vegan Fitness discussion forum: “Vegan Fitness for people into healthy and compassionate living.”

Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness

Based on this post, Amaz0ns.com had an Anti-Vegan Day:

“If God, Gaia, nature, evolution or the hippie overlords who live above in shadow didn’t want us to eat meat, those teeth wouldn’t be there. The canines are the longest and strongest teeth in your mouth, because meat is important.

And trying to build muscle without meat and dairy is like trying to ride a bicycle with one’s feet tied together: it might be possible, but why would anybody bother?”

Soy sauce made out of human hair

This should make dieting much easier. If you have a taste for food after reading this, you are stone cold! Blogger Lou Minatti asks “You want some human hair with your eggroll?“:

“A team of journalists from the state-run China Central Television (CCTV) investigated the production of the Hongshuai Soy Sauce. The Chinese journalists went to the food seasoning manufacturer in Hubei province. They pretended to be buyers and enquired about the soy sauce ingredients. The source was human hair. But wait, it gets better.

“Because the human hair was gathered from salons, barbershops and hospitals around the country, it was unhygienic and mixed with condoms, used hospital cottons, used menstrual cycle pads, used syringes, etc. After being filtered by the workers, the hair would then be cut small for processing into amino acid syrup.”

The original report can be found in The Internet Journal of Toxicology:

“The reason for the food seasoning manufacturer using human hair to generate amino acid syrup for making soy sauce is economic. Human hair is cheap and rich in protein content, similar to soybean, wheat and bran, which gives the soy sauce its characteristic favour.”

Museum of Hoaxes has another view:

“But what the article doesn’t mention, but which I believe to be true, is that soy sauce isn’t the only food product made out of this cheap hair-made amino acid powder. The stuff is also sold in large quantities to the bakery industry which uses it as a source of L-cysteine to make dough softer and more elastic. Think about that next time you’re chewing on a bagel.”

Timing of food consumption activates genes in specific brain area, researchers find

Southwestern Medical Center tells us of news from the molecular genetics front, pertaining to human dysfunctional eating patterns, resulting in obesity:

“Giving up your regular late-night snack may be hard, and not just because it’s a routine. The habit may genetically change an area of the brain to expect the food at that time, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have discovered.”

In a somewhat related news story, Diet Blog writes about research published in the British Journal of Psychology: “Hungry Men Prefer Heavy Women“;

“Researchers at universities must have a lot of spare time on their hands. Recent research shows that men who are hungry (rather than satiated) find heavier women more attractive.

The researchers believe this is due to a ’survival preference’: in times of food shortage - a heavier woman becomes ideal. They also point to physiological factors (blood sugar, hormones) that may affect drives and interests.”

The blog Slashfood also covers the subject…
